Professor Séamus P J Higson
Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Cambridge


Professor Higson joined the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Cambridge, UK in 2020 bringing to his new role more than 25 years’ experience of bringing fundamental research through to practical implementation and full commercialisation – based on technologies ranging from electrochemical fuel cells and electrolysers as enablers for the hydrogen economy – through to biomedical biosensors and sensors for use within the water industry and environmental monitoring.

Professor Higson’s career to date has spanned academic departments of Chemistry, Medicine, Biotechnology, Materials Science and Engineering – with this being reflected in his publications and ongoing research interests.

Professor Higson serves in an advisory and/or consultative capacity for a number of public and professional bodies, has acted as an expert witness for a number of high profile intellectual property and patent legal cases in the US and Europe as well as being the founding Director for Microarray Ltd – a company formed in 1999 upon science and patents originating from his group.

A chartered Scientist and Engineer, Professor Higson is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and serves on the accreditation board for the Engineering Council.

Professor Higson is author of in excess of 130 research papers along with a number of textbooks including the flagship Oxford text, ‘Analytical Chemistry’: (ISBN: 0 19-8502893).

In July 2018, Professor Higson was awarded a Doctor of Science (DSc) from Cranfield University in recognition to his research over two decades and the impact this has had to a number of fields.

Professor Higson serves as the departmental programme manager for the M.Phil. in Bioscience Enterprise (MBE).
