Nanomaterials and Nanoarchitectures II.
Composite Materials & Their Applications

Smolenice Castle

28 June 2024 – 5 July 2024

In summer 2024, an ASI titled “Nanomaterials and Nanoarchitectures II: Composite Materials and Their Applications” will be held as a follow-up to the previous ASI. The event will take place at Smolenice Castle, located approximately 70km northwest of Slovakia’s capital, Bratislava.

The castle’s location is secluded, situated above the village of Smolenice. It is surrounded by a park with inviting pathways for leisurely walks, which also connect to marked tourist routes leading to the Little Carpathians (Slovak: Male Karpaty; German: Kleine Karpaten; Hungarian: Kis-Karpatok), a low mountain range spanning about 100km and part of the Carpathian Mountains.

The highest point, Zaruby, stands at an elevation of 768 meters. The hike from the castle to the Zaruby hilltop typically takes around 4.5-5 hours for a round trip. Participants preferring nature walks can opt for this instead of the bus excursion to Bratislava on Day 6 (Thursday, July 4, 2024).

Registration began on March 1st and will close once the desired number of students (60) is reached. The Summer school is organized for citizens from NATO countries.

In summer 2013, an ASI entitled “Nanomaterials and Nanoarchitectures” took place in Cork, Ireland.

The curriculum covered recent progress in the nanosciences and various nanotechnologies leading to the development of advanced structures that included colloids, nanoparticles, oxides and metals.

During the past 10 years, substantial progress has been achieved in terms of research into nanomaterials and nanotechnologies, both of which became more application driven and research interest has focused onto composite nanomaterials.

The students gained a fundamental understanding of the properties of such structures and the basic concepts behind their use for the manipulation of light on the nanoscale.

In summer 2024, an ASI is entitled “Nanomaterials and Nanoarchitectures II. Composite materials and their applications” and it is a follow up of the previous ASI 2013. It will take place in the picturesque surroundings of the Smolenice castle, Slovakia.

The curriculum will cover the decade of research in the area of nanotechnologies and concentrate on technologies/materials/devices applications, although there will be also several lectures covering the fundamental concepts of Supramolecular Chemistry, Nanotechnologies and Functional and Composite Materials.
